Good Weak on Sweet Nothings Radio

This week on Sweet Nothings Radio we’ll be interviewing Good Weak! I’ve mentioned them briefly on the site a couple months back, but in case you forgot, Good Weak is a post-punk band from Monroe NY. They’re gearing up to play a great show October 8th with Fat History Month , which will be their first show at Purchase College. Be sure to tune in at 6pm this Sunday 10/7/12!

Song Title: Mandarin Oranges

Artist: The Ferns

Album: The Ferns

The Ferns are an indie-pop band from Bristol/Burlington, CT.

“Mandarin Oranges” is definitely the best track off of The Ferns self-titled debut. It is essentially the only track that slightly breaks free from the mellow and laid-back essence of the album. It starts off with a nice bright chord progression with simple and catchy drum fills that are definitely appealing. Towards the end of this track is breaks into a strange, almost tribal-feel, complete with bongoes and an echo effect on the vocals. Although the ending does make the song feel somewhat fragmented, I appreciate the energy and experimentation of the ending that The Ferns displays. All in all The Ferns’ “Mandarin Oranges” and self-titled debut are definitely worth checking out.

Sweet Nothings Radio!

Hello Sweet Nothings faithful, this is really short notice but still nonetheless big news! We’ve got our own radio show on WPSR, where we’ll be hosting podcasts, having interviews and playing some music of course. Check it out premieres at 6pm, and will continue every Sunday! Head over to http://purchaseradio.org/ and take a listen!

Song Title: Get Back

Artist: The Keepsies

Album: Dumb Fun

The Keepsies are a trio from Brooklyn, NY. Combining elements of 60’s surf-rock, 50’s doo wop, and the best qualities of the more modern catchy and upbeat indie-pop.

This track starts off with heavy Beach Boys sound, with it’s layered vocal melodies and bright guitar riffs. However, The Keepsies are not just a band stuck in the past. They definitely prove themselves to be a band capable of capturing your heart with “Get Back” ‘s short, but memorable appeal. The thing I love about The Keepsies, and their debut EP, is that they manage to stray from cliche’s, while still keeping it simple. In the middle of the track they even throw in a goofy dialogue. It surprisingly doesn’t take away from “Get Back” at all and only adds to the exuberant nature of The Keepsies and their music. Like “Get Back” ‘s preceding track states, they just “wanna be dumb and have some fun.”

Album Review: Pinkus EP

Artist: Pinkus

Album: Pinkus EP

For people who like: Title Fight, Polaroids, Glocca Morra

The Pinkus EP definitely gives that straight forward, Glocca Morra-esque punk vibe.  It’s not a cop out, and is definitely not a copy of a copy.  This record sounds like a bunch of dudes just speaking their minds; no bullshit here.  The first two tracks, “Titus” & “Dobis,” give us two brooding, yet entertaining slow-burners about coming to terms with depression when your life is actually pretty good, which is something I know I can relate to.  “Laugh It Off” is definitely an ode to hardcore from days past.  The song plays out like a Black Flag song, complete with a jagged, Greg Ginn style solo.  “Fall Ball” is the closing track to the Pinkus EP, staying steady and pumping forward like a moving train.  Definitely some notes of Fucked Up on this one.  Overall a killer EP, and definitely worth a listen.  Good tunes for vegging on your computer, thinking about your ex-girlfriend, or driving to your buddy’s house.

Song Title: Modern Times

Artist: All The President’s Men

Album: Modern Times

All The President’s Men is a hardcore band from Brighton, MI. For just a first demo, Michigan’s own All The President’s Men really throws down hard. Don’t let their long band name fool you, there is absolutely nothing pretend about these guys. “Modern Times” is a short, but meaningful, ballad about being trapped in the harsh and monotonous wasteland of our “modern times.”

For a track that is only just over a minute long, “Modern Times” really enthuses me. It may be short, but it has multiple and distinguished parts. “Modern Times” starts off with a nice thrash-filled introduction, and then breaks into a slow bass-led interlude; the type of thing that essentially gets moshers psyched. The track is ultimately finished off with a heavy onslaught of angry vocals and bombastic guitar that is surprisingly catchy as well. All The President’s Men don’t need to use the “gang vocal” effect because by the end of this song you’re going to be singing along whether you want to or not.

This right here is a precursor to the Sweet Nothings Podcast. We met outside during the SPOOK HOUSES//SIRS//LITTLE BIG LEAGUE//THE HOT FLOOD show, and our plan was to do an on-the-spot review of the entire show. Unfortunately, we only reviewed The Hot Flood’s performance and got too involved in the fun of it all to continue.

An important message from Sweet Nothings

Apologies for the slight absence this past week and a half. I’ve been gearing for college, which I am now back at, and am getting acclimated. Sweet Nothings will still be operational throughout the school year, but only slightly toned down. Here are some of the minor changes to the site:

  • Summer Lovin’ will no longer be a feature on the site, until next summer (duh).
  • Performance Reviews will probably start to outweigh Album Reviews.
  • More Podcasts for sure
  • Content will be more spread out.

Don’t worry though, Sweet Nothings will definitely maintain it’s presence online and I will do my best to balance my school work and this website appropriately.

Thanks for listening,

-Victor

Summer Lovin’: Candy Hearts

A couple weeks ago, I ran into this guy and his friends at the local ice cream shop I work at. I never caught any of their names, but they were all really funny and nice people. They reminded me of an older version of my friends and I. Now, a few days ago I was bumming it on the internet and found this band Candy Hearts, and sure enough, I see that same dude I met in their pictures!

Candy Hearts are really great. If you’re into 90’s nostalgia bands and female fronted vocals, like Swearin’, then this should be right up your alley.
