Song Title: Living Every Dream

Artist: Antwon

Album: End of Earth

Did you forget what year it was?

Of course you didn’t, but San Jose rapper Antwon would have you thinking it was the early ‘90s with his song “Living Every Dream.” The simplistic bassline and thumping synths produce about as old-school of a vibe you’ll ever see this side of the millennium as the emcee drops boastful rhymes about “garlic shrimp everything.” Even more impressive than the song is the video—directed by Brandon Tauszik—which looks as if it could have been taken straight from the Yo! MTV Raps archive. Antwon looks and raps the part in this single, his lyrics hearkening back to a time when rapper’s bravados were almost silly. He and producer Pictureplane have put together a pretty nice summer rap track—especially for those kicking back on a red Beamer next to the beach.

It’s not the smartest or catchiest form of hip-hop we’re used to seeing nowadays—hell, it’s not like any hip-hop nowadays—but this nostalgia-laced track is a welcomed and almost refreshing change of pace in an era of rap dominated by unimaginative sellouts. Let’s just hope Antwon doesn’t stay in the past too much longer.

7/10
